In my research, as in my art and my teaching, I believe that both approaches are required. Discipline is also absolutely necessary, since a constant and very self-aware approach is crucial to the success of this type of research. The type of arts-related research that such researchers might engage with is more akin to artsinformed inquiry, also referred to by Ewing and Hughes (2008:516) as ‘expressive construction’, the focus being to communicate new understandings through creative means, yet without those creative means being considered as works of art. A healthy scepticism and an ironic posture have also been helpful tools. My ability not to take myself seriously at times, and to welcome the criticism of others, especially non-academics, has been of enormous benefit. It is essential for me to be very structured and organised in the construction of my research. I find it necessary to keep both mental and physical records of where it is going. It is vital to be multitask-oriented. On the other hand, it is also necessary to allow the work to ‘breathe’, and whilst I am aware that this sounds very esoteric, it is an artistic truth for me.
