Soon after the Arlington story broke, a Facebook group (that grew to well over 5,000 likes in just forty-eight hours and to over 30,000 soon thereafter) was created calling for Stone’s employer, who had paid for the trip to Arlington National, to dismiss her. That employer—Living Independently Forever, Inc. (LIFE), a nonprofit organization in Hyannis, Massachusetts—had no choice but to respond: This photograph in no way reflects the opinions or values of the LIFE organization, which holds our nation’s veterans in the highest regard.

However, by 2011—just a few years into the Social Age—things had changed. We were not just online by then. We were “connected consumers”—connected to each other by the hundreds of millions on Facebook, Twitter, review sites, public forums, Q&A sites like Quora, and in so many other ways. The cataclysmic shift in connectivity—and collective power—was well under way, and we were just looking for a powerful test case where we could flex our collective digital muscle. Bank of America became the target of these customers.
