As has been noted, the Taipings themselves had raced down the Yangzi from Wuchang to Nanjing in their great armada in 1853. However, Taiping control of the Yangzi provinces and the brutal military contest between the rebels and forces loyal to the Qing Dynasty had a most detrimental effect on communication and people’s livelihoods along the river. Moreover, after 1853, the annual grain tribute from the food surplus provinces of central China could no longer be shipped along the Yangzi and Grand Canal to the imperial capital, forcing thousands of destitute boatmen and canal workers into the ranks of the unemployed.
Nine-tenths of the corpses lying on the streets were those of the aged. Little children under two and three years old were also slaughtered for fun and their bodies lay prostrate along the roads. 17 Qing loyalist troops had abducted not only Taiping women, but also local females living in the outskirts of Nanjing. Most of these captives were subsequently taken to Hunan, the home province of the Xiang Army. S. Slaney a day or so after 12 Daily Lives of Civilians in Wartime Asia its capture by Qing forces, described “the utter desolation of everything within the walls” in terms that were less than flattering to the Taiping: I think a ride through the streets of Nankin [sic], as they are at present, would satisfy the most ardent advocate of the rebel cause of the dreadful hollowness of the system they support.
Furthermore, many of the landlords had fled before the advancing rebels, thereby lessening the burden on the tenants since rents were not collected. At this time, Shi Dakai, one of the prominent leaders of the early Taiping movement, acquired a reputation as an outstanding military commander and administrator during his campaigns in Jiangxi and Anhui. In this connection a Chinese bookseller described the Taiping occupation of his hometown of Fuzhou (Jiangxi) on March 28, 1856: They afterwards sent recruiting parties through the towns and villages with banners.
