67 It does depend partly on how sociology is defined. I make a distinction between sociology and social theory, and issues of social theory go a long way back. If sociology means something coherent, it couldn't really refer to the study of society in general, that's much too vague. So I have always thought of sociology as reflection on the emergence of modernity. You have said that you now see the origins of sociology much as you did twenty-five years ago. Are there classical figures in sociology who, on longer reflection, you think deserved a larger place in this story?
