To this end, we searched a large word corpus for correspondences between on the one hand Accent I and short vocalic elements, and between Accent II and long vocalic elements on the other. These could easily be established. To be more precise, they applied to 75 per cent of the words in the corpus. Strangely enough, the exceptional cases were all instances of words, which in Weert have long vowels or diphthongs, while their counterparts in the Baexem dialect are realized with Accent I and have long vowels or diphthongs as well.

Interaction between pitch, duration, and stress I tried to disentangle the separate roles of pitch and duration in a series of listening tests employing synthesized stimuli (Lehiste 197075). A few illustrations are offered below. The synthesis was performed at the Bell Telephone Laboratories at Murray Hill in 1968, using the Digital Data Processor synthesizer then available at the Bell Laboratories. The structure of the stimuli is described on Figure 3. There were two sets of stimuli, one testing the perception of variation in intervocalic consonant duration - the tabatapa-tappa set.
