For adults, spelling has become highly reduced in its meanings, by and large (though never exclusively) to something like: capturing the essentials of the characteristics of the sound of words in graphic form, via the means of letters. Early spelling 24 Language, however, is much more than sound as in speech, or of graphic substance as in writing. In many ways we could say that sound is itself a spelling—a spelling of meanings, of ideas, of attitudes, feelings, dispositions. That would considerably extend our sense of what spelling is.
Indeed, it was necessary that it should do so. Of course, social theorists (and others) knew that things were always a bit more complex than the theory or the ideology suggested, and managers would fear that things could slither away from under their control. And, of course, phoneticians and phonologists knew that speech was variable, whether as social or as regional dialect, and that sounds were variable in their different environments. Most of them knew that the phoneme was a useful abstraction and, as such, a fiction.
She knows what the word sounds like, but she doesn’t have a ‘picture’ of the graphic representation available to her. As I say, the rough sketch of assumptions that I have drawn may seem bizarre; but I believe it corresponds closely to what is the case. ’. My answer, to restate it, is largely that a particular view of language has held nearly unchallenged sway for a very long time. That view has seen language as stable; as primarily writing; as consisting of knowable and describable small elements, which are put together to make larger elements—a building-block view of language.
