Smith 18 I remember that. When he left [for the summer] and said, “Oh, it was kind of slow,” well, it was right after that he kind of pissed me off. But the point was I was, I mad, during that time, I was makin’ more promises to the guys. So, tell me about a time in the project that you thought was dangerous. Were there any times when you thought, “Oh, shit. ” Yeah. And uh, actually one time when uh, that guy dead, the other guy’s dead too. Uh, he wanted us to stop, we was on the Washington stroll, the Delmar stroll when he wanted to get out and whoop that guy’s ass.
They were not funded. My colleague Richard Wright had conducted field research on burglars with the noted English criminologist Trevor Bennett (Bennett & Wright, 1984). I had published on deterrence and was interested in offender decision making. It seemed a good fit. We responded to the NIJ Request for Proposals promising to interview 20 active residential burglars. The reviewers liked our proposal in every respect save one: no one believed we could find and convince 20 active residential burglars to participate in a research study.
So, I knew right then and there by your status, and I had been in school for a while, with you guys. So, I knew what you were doin’ was on the legit side. So, I didn’t have no fear in that. Let’s think about Richard and me in all this. Can white, middle class, college professors really understand the street? I mean, I think of you as our navigator, right? You kind of took us into a world we wanted to understand better. But, I mean, how much can we know what it’s like to be a young black guy growin’ up in a high crime neighborhood, doing crime?
