Chapter 5, Section 2 (pages 145–147) The United States has about 300 million people from different ethnic backgrounds. Early immigrants came mainly from Great Britain and Ireland. In the late 1800s, immigrants arrived from other areas of Europe, China, Japan, Mexico, and Canada. So many diverse backgrounds led some Americans to worry about cultural change. In 1882 and 1924, laws were passed that banned, or blocked, most immigration from China and many other countries.
