While similarity in semantic sub-features, as described above, of L1 and L2 words in closely related languages makes it easier for learners to acquire them, such similarity can facilitate acquisition even when the corresponding languages are typologically distant. A study by Yu (1996a, 1996b) demonstrated that Chinese L2 learners of English, whose L1 shares cross-linguistic similarities with English in the semantic components of motion verbs, performed better in using such verbs than Japanese-speaking learners of English whose native language does not have such similarities.

It includes the semantic and syntactic specifications of a lexical entry and, in language use, mediates between the conceptual level and the ‘lexeme’, its morphophonological form. The semantic specification of the lemma includes the conceptual conditions for its activation and its syntactic specifications, such as category, tense, person, number, case and constraints on occurrence. The mental lexicon may also store additional properties, such as stylistic features and relations to other words (Levelt, 1989: 187; after Kempen & Huijbers, 1983).

A major difference between the low- and high-proficiency learners of the study was that the latter used a much wider repertoire of potentially successful processing types, including interactional processing; moreover, these learners were able to adapt their processing according to word type and available cues, thus demonstrating ‘flexibility’ of processing, a construct that Haastrup has elaborated in subsequent research. Overall, Haastrup’s (1991a) findings demonstrated the importance of L2 proficiency for lexical inferencing success and its relationship to lexical processing patterns.
