Her first ware was fired in a brickmaking kiln; later pieces were bisque-fired in Milwaukee and sent to Red Wing, Minnesota, for glaze firing; another arrangement was to throw in Milwaukee and ship to Akron, Ohio, for firing. She abandoned potting before 1904 and relocated to Chicago, where she taught pottery classes in her studio in the Fine Arts Building and wrote and lectured on ceramics and other handicrafts. After the death of his father in 1880 and the departure of his brother Alexander for California in 1884, Hugh began to focus on creating Chinese glazes.
